Election day has come. Naturally, everything is stirred up and tense… even for our heroines who are too young to vote.
Pre-Comic Notes:
This comic
was uploaded before the 2024 election. If you hope to see the results discussed
in the comic, let me spare you the tension: you won’t. This is a comic about
the Catholic concept of good government as viewed by St. Thomas Aquinas.
Content Warning: Some characters express their political views. This isn’t done as advocacy but to portray different opinions in different groups. Iimi remains apolitical in her speaking about Catholic views.
Post-Comic
Notes:
Given that
I work 1-2 weeks ahead, don’t expect discussions in the comics on the results of
the actual election for at least that long unless it creates a
crisis involving the Catholic Church. And, if I do discuss it, expect more along
the lines of “this is our obligation in response.” It won’t be a comic of “this
is the best/worst possible result that could have happened.” I happen to agree
with Pope Francis that neither candidate is pro-life.
Regarding the title (of course, it references the song “Send in the Clowns”). I originally had a song parody planned for the comic. But I think it lacked Christian charity towards our two major candidates. So, it never made it past the “notes” stage of the script.
Using “Red,” “Blue,” and “You know who” instead of “Republicans,” “Democrats,” and “Trump” was a deliberate choice. In these polarized times, taking a step back seemed the best way to reduce partisan appearances. It was only when this became unnatural sounding that I made use of names.
The demographics of the mosque and the synagogue were chosen to reflect the reported divisions at the time of scripting.
The Demographics of Ashanne County (which Babylon is part of) were taken from the Pew Research reports on the division of America in general.
The objections that the “AThE” club used were what I have encountered on social media… minus the references to the sexual abuse scandals.
The Pope’s words on the candidates not being pro-life can be found HERE.
For context on St. Thomas Aquinas’ words on government, see HERE.
I encountered the slogan “Amen is the New Sieg Heil” online. It seems obscure, but I could see Rick and Joella using it.
