It's one week until school begins, and everyone makes last-minute preparations… In The Calm Before the Storm
Post-Comic Notes:
Theban is a letter
replacement cipher. It's one of the Renaissance-era alphabets used by people
who studied magic (it was the Renaissance, not the Middle Ages, when people were
obsessed with it). This one was from the early 16th century with
false claims of being older. It's a 24-letter alphabet. Modern font versions
have added the missing two letters.
It's currently popular with witches who use it to conceal their "spells" and other writings. But, as it stands, it's not difficult to decode. It's just hard to memorize.
ROT13 stands for "ROTate by 13 places." So, A becomes N, B becomes O, and so on. "This is a sentence" becomes "Guvf vf n fragrapr".
So, technically, you have enough information now to decode Vicki Marks' message to Coach Ally… though it probably isn't worth it.
GLAD-HANDING (which has a sense of "being insincerely very friendly to people you have not met before, as a way of trying to get an advantage") is a satire of the name of a particular advocacy group out there.
Anne's fall was based on personal experience, though my circumstances were different. I fell the day I was released from the hospital and had to be readmitted the same day. Like Anne, I instinctively threw my leg out to regain my balance and landed on the stump. It was probably my most excruciating experience.
