Della and her roommate, Myrna, try to track down the Ochlos residence to see if Paula is the victim of physical abuse. Myrna asks why God doesn’t stop one person from being victimized by another.
The question of why God permits evil is a hard one. We do trust that God is good and all-powerful, but when something terrible happens, it is hard to grasp. But sometimes, when we are outraged over the suffering of others and we ask, “How come God didn’t prevent it?” we need to consider the counter question: What if He sent you?
(One annoyance. Back when this was composed, I pulled the population of "25,000-30,000" at random. But I later established the population of all three towns as 15,000. The latter figure is canon.)
