"Very Well, Alone"

David Low 1940

This comic, published in World War II after the fall of France in 1940 seems to fit well what faithful Christians think with today's travesty ruling by the Supreme Court, forcing so-called "Gay Marriage" to be treated the same as actual marriage, while letting stand a ruling by a lower court in California which overturned a law defining marriage as being between a man and a woman.

That effectively means that the Supreme Court has paved the way for any state to redefine marriage: if the government of the state refuses to defend a law recognizing marriage as being between a man and a woman, then the federal government must provide federal benefits to any same-sex couple in a relationship as if it were a "marriage."

In 1940, the comic showed the determination of the British to fight on against Germany after the rest of Europe had fallen to an evil regime.  The British soldier shakes his fist in defiance as we see bombers coming towards him from the darkness.

Today, we must fight on against a regime which seeks to impose its views which are contrary to our being faithful to what is right.  Those who would reject Christian values have set their sights on us.  Without the support of a just application of law and without support of a government which chooses to ignore whatever laws it dislikes, we must fight on in doing what is right.  Even though the powers of darkness unite against us.

Of course, as Christians, we must fight on in love, recognizing that our opponents are still loved by God even though they have been taken in by evil.  We must pray for their conversion and make ourselves open to being vessels of grace that God sends to convert them.

And of course we must remember we are not alone.  Jesus promised that He would always be with His Church (Matt 28:20) and the gates of Hell would not prevail against it (Matt 16:18).  The Church in America is in for some dark times ahead.  The oppression may be overt or covert.  Individual Catholics may end up compromising (possibly even among those who shepherd the Church in America), but God will protect His Church and we must remain faithful and fight on seeking the salvation of our enemies.
